MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

CLEVELAND, OH

Steel Structures of Ohio served as a design build contractor, collaborating with architects and engineers at Westlake Reed Leskosky, to complete 34,000 square foot structure to house the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland, Ohio. This four-story building seamlessly rises from a hexagonal base to a square top. In addition, the atrium included a grand staircase, which encased a second stair case as it cascades away from the interior building structure. Steel Structures used BIM technology to collaborate with designers and other trade contractors to ensure full integration of the buildings components, while adhering to a strict budget.

As the Senior Project Manager and BIM Coordinator for SSO on this project, I employed many key project strategies and initiatives to bring this project to a successful completion, such as:

  • Through the use of a design build project delivery system, I was able to work with designers to limit material inefficiencies in the building structure, allowing us to reduce the overall cost of the project, bringing the final project cost in line with the Owner's project budget.

  • As a design build contractor, I partnered with the design team to implement and utilize BIM technologies to ensure strict adherence to the design requirements, while ensuring that there were no conflicts between the building components of all trades involved.

  • By involving our installers in the design process, we were able to design and place all temporary supports prior to delivery, build the entire structure virtually, sequence and load the project to assist with site restrictions, and deliver a complex structure well within the required tolerances.
