Project Info
When Marathon Petroleum Company needed to build a new distillate hydrotreater line at their Canton, Ohio refinery to meet new EPA regulations for Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel, they tapped Steel Structures of Ohio to fabricate the required structural and miscellaneous steel.
Due to fire and blast design considerations that require the steel to be encased in concrete after erection, the design team approached SSO after the completion of the first phase to see how SSO could help reduce the cost and time impact that the concrete application was having on the overall project. By fabricating, galvanizing, assembling components, applying wire mesh, and placing concrete prior to shipment to the project site, SSO was able to place 95% of the required concrete on the structural components in their fabrication facility, saving an estimated $6MM of field labor over the course of the project.
In addition, the contract for this project was awarded as a unit price contract. With a fluid design process, I was tasked with tracking changes, based on the agreed unit prices and submitting change orders, while also tracking every deliverable to insure that SSO was compensated according to the unit price schedule. The end result was a profitable and timely project that the customer was highly satisfied with, and lead to additional projects being awarded to SSO.
